To understand how it works, let's look at the low back and its structure.

Unlike other structures in your body, the spinal intervertebral discs do not have a very good blood supply. Once they're damaged they heal very slowly or with scar tissue. A disc gets its nutrition from the bones above and below it through a pumping action that increases with movement. However, once a disc is damaged or torn, it loses its ability to maintain an adequate fluid intake and will become brittle and dry.
